Headmaster Sanders Announces Retirement

MUS Headmaster Peter D. Sanders has announced his retirement at the end of the 2026-27 school year after a decade at the helm of the independent school for 6th-12th grade boys.

In a message to the school community, Sanders wrote, “Serving MUS has been the highest professional honor of my life. I deeply respect and love this great school. The people of MUS – students, teachers, staff, parents, alumni, and trustees – have been a source of encouragement and strength for me since day one."
Board of Trustees Chair Will Thompson, MUS Class of 1995, praised Sanders’ leadership. “During Pete’s tenure, an already strong and established MUS has advanced significantly, strengthening its position as one of the leading college-preparatory day schools for boys in the nation. He initiated and led the Legacy Forward Strategic Plan process, resulting in a blueprint for a series of historic developments:
  • The creation of a transformational, three-phase Campus Master Plan.
  • The launch of Phase 1 of the plan, a project that will soon yield a 105,000-square-foot complex for science, the arts, the Admissions Office, and a new Hyde Chapel.
  • The initiation of the $200 million Bold Vision Bright Future campaign. To date, $110 million has been committed, including $50 million for the endowment, which puts the fund on a near-term trajectory to exceed $100 million.
  • The expansion of the school with the addition of a sixth grade in 2024-25.”
Although Sanders will continue to oversee the operation of the school and remain engaged in campus life until June 2027, he has announced his retirement at this point to facilitate a smooth leadership transition process. The Board of Trustees has convened a committee to oversee a nationwide search for his successor.

“In the meantime, for the next 18 months,” Thompson said, “Memphis University School remains under the skilled and accomplished leadership of Headmaster Pete Sanders.”
