DAR Presents Awards
Representatives of the Daughters of the American Revolution Watauga Chapter, Maria Burke and Jean McSwain, presented awards to Liam Curran ’27 and Upper School History Chair Jonathan Jones.
Curran won first place in the Watauga Chapter for his vivid portrait of John Jay in “John Jay: Patriot, Diplomat, and Chief Justice” in the Patriots of the American Revolution contest. This is the fourth year in a row Curran has won an award from the chapter; the three previous essays went on to win state championships.
To honor Curran’s unique accomplishments, he also received the DAR Youth Leadership Award. According to Burke, it is the first in the history of the chapter. The certificate and medal recognize Curran for his honor, service, courage, leadership, and patriotism.
Jones accepted a certificate on behalf of the school for “Honoring the Ideals of Our Founders” for the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This award, which was given to four other schools, goes to institutions who have "demonstrated devotion to teaching the ideals of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes."
Additional Lower School awards will be given at a later date.
