Mao MathCounts State Champ
Seventh grader Andrew Mao captured the state individual MathCounts title in Nashville on March 28. His performance qualifies him for the RTX MathCounts National Competition in Orlando May 10-11.
Math Instructor Steve Gadbois said that Mao has remarkable math talent, an uncommon work ethic, and self-taught knowledge well beyond his years.
“All I’ve done for Andrew this year is open some new math doors for him and then get out of his way,” he said.
Mao brought back a plaque for Dr. Gadbois in recognition of his coaching. Albert Ding ’26 was also helpful in the seventh grader’s preparation.
In the chapter competition held at the University of Memphis in February, Mao earned perfect scores on all parts of MathCounts: sprint, target, and countdown.
