Ferebee Honored for 25 Years of Service
Headmaster Pete Sanders recognized David Ferebee for 25 years of service to Memphis University School.
Ferebee joined MUS in 1999 as an athletic trainer, bringing experience working with high school, collegiate, and professional athletes. A graduate of The Ohio State University with a degree in exercise science, he earned his master's degree in exercise and sports science from The University of Memphis.
Over the course of his MUS tenure – interrupted by one year in the Marines and one with Auburn University – Ferebee has served the school in numerous capacities, including chair of the Physical Education Department and assistant athletic director for logistics and support.
“His steady leadership and commitment to student well-being have made him an indispensable member of the MUS community,” Sanders said.
Ferebee’s service was especially vital during the COVID-19 pandemic. As coordinator of the school’s mitigation protocols, he helped design and implement the systems that allowed students to return safely to campus.
Through contact tracing, health screenings, and close collaboration with families and public health officials, he played a critical role in keeping the MUS community healthy during a period of uncertainty.
In 2021 Ferebee received the Jean Barbee Hale Award for Outstanding Service in recognition of his efforts during the pandemic. Sanders noted at the time that the school owed him “a great debt” for his dedication and leadership.
Named swimming head coach in 2023, Ferebee has drawn upon his extensive knowledge of athletic development and his experience as the parent of competitive swimmers. Under his leadership, the Owls have continued to be among the top swimming programs in Shelby County and the state.
